I decided to deactivate my Facebook account. I think this means it still exists in some dark recess of the interweb, as I can reactivate at any time. How kind of those good Facebook folk, storing my status updates…forever.

I imagine this to have little impact on my happiness. Maybe I’ll spend those daily minutes on things like this blog.

PS – my hair is getting long.

Zingerman’s sells a cheese making kit, and after months of gentle nudging, one finally arrived. With a few simple ingredients and in as many steps, homemade mozzarella was ours. We used Milk Thistle milk, purchased at the local farmer’s market and begotten from a cow who’s dined mostly on grass and clover and all the things responsible for giving the milk unbeatable flavor. Our cheese won’t be winning any beauty prize, but it is mighty tasty. The kit comes with enough rennet and citric acid to yield 30 batches, and includes a recipe for ricotta (next week’s experiment).

While documenting cheese, I also experimented more with photographing food. I love the quality of photos posted on thekitchensinkrecipes. Not blessed with large southern facing windows, I’m considering regular treks to the front stoop to take advantage of more conducive light – that or shooting in the bedroom, which bugs me in that it’s got the best photographic ambiance in the apartment.

Oh, and stumbled upon some amazing shots of decaying buildings in Detroit. Another kick in the pants for me – I’ve been a bit slack on creativity these days.

Good friend Carrie invited us to her Portland home, cared for us, fed us, and showed us a right good time. We had a list of goals…

  • Lobster dining on an ocean overlook
  • Mickey dog love
  • Maine blueberries, raw, in pancakes, in muffins
  • Beach, boats and coast

No camera to capture the last on our list – I’m still scared to get my camera near sand and water. Our planned day on Long Island (Maine has one too) was eclipsed by a freak beach emergency involving momentary unconciousness and an acquaintance with the island’s volunteer EMT corps, Portland’s fire department ambulance service, and finally the ER. All is well – my first fainting spell – which taught me to drink water at the beach.

Mo fell in love with this part of America, I knew he would.

Maine, we will be back.

Ellie, weeks old, already enchanting boys across Brooklyn. Last weekend we spent Saturday on the North Fork of Long Island with Ellie and her family (both actual and honorary). This was my first trip to a New York beach in which I actually set foot in the water – a warm bay with clams the size of your fist to be harvested (somewhat legally) for a tasty fish soup. Admittedly, the main attraction was the new member of our Brooklyn clan…hard to take your eyes off of such tiny fingers and toes.
