I forgot my camera again. And of course I spotted a cool scape (not a word, methinks) of a graffiti wall with hipster homemade bikes perched on the scaffolding before it. The scene appropriately unfolded outside the Tobacco Warehouse - one of the Dumbo locations hosting Brooklyn Designs this year. There was a lot of wood at this locally conceived furniture, accessories, etc. expo, as well as chatter about sustainability. One designer showcasing a wooden chair described it as biodegradable. I suppose one of the advantages of working in this centuries old medium is the ability to easily play the green card.

Some of the standouts included Red Hook based uhuru, a furniture designer that transforms used bourbon barrels into this chair.

The winner for “I want to be seven again” award goes to the folks behind a new toy called Geemo, a stretchy, gummy, set of magnetic links which are similar to what I imagine an alien umbilical cord would look like.

And to cure apartment boredom, I am quite smitten with the vinyl wall stickers by dVider. They come in monkey, octopus, and seaweed to name a few.

This weekend last year, we were at the exact location with photographer friend (and relative) Jeremy to scout locations for our wedding. Lo and behold, we spotted a wedding shoot in the park just in front of the Tobacco Warehouse as we were leaving. I like to think we get an A for originality for deciding on Red Hook instead.

Be fooled no longer! Despite the deceptive wooden spoon and saute pan, these mushrooms are not home made. They were preconceived, premarinated and precooked by the good people at Stinky. I did reheat with a bit of rosemary and pepper, and added a touch of olive oil to cut on the vinegar. As part of my indulgent birthday weekend I went to Stinky twice to procure these little beauties. What makes this mix so great is the unusual assortment of fungi. No shiitake, no crimini, no porcini, no standard grocery store varieties. We’ve got straw mushrooms, namekos and another I can’t identify. Nice! I need to head to Chinatown to track down some of these.

Hand wrapped packages sent through the mail are pretty special. I almost forgot it was my birthday, almost, and so spent a few seconds being happily puzzled when I spotted the box with my name on it. It came from Lisa. Yip!

Where to dance in New York City? A venue where the scene is anti-scene. A crowd that doesn’t dress to attract, doesn’t care about who’s in the room and is just concerned that the music is good and that everyone is giddy to be shaking it.

I knew the perfect place once. Back in Ann Arbor, the kids put on an excellent party called The Bang. It happens maybe every two months, and usually has a theme. I went to The Space BangĀ  - and saw an alien or two.

I miss dancing. Tried to Tango and didn’t feel it. I need to be free, outside of technical or partner restraint.

Alone, in the dewy light from this rainy day, I dance around my apartment. And sing along! To the music on this mix that captures my recent listens that I wanted to post on muxtape. Thanks to the tip from Mike. But most of the music I have is not MP3 (the acceptable format) and I don’t know how to make it so. Here’s the playlist (and if I like you maybe I’ll make you a copy).
